We’ve got the freshness!

When food is at stake, Deutsche Frischemärkte (the German Freshness Markets association), known as GFI, is the best guarantor of freshness, variety and quality. GFI brings together the most important wholesale markets in the German-speaking countries along with a number of retail markets. Together, they ensure nutritional quality for more than 100 million consumers in Germany and its European neighbours.

As central urban commercial platforms, the wholesale markets with their approximately 2,800 middle sized wholesalers, importers and producers supply around 56,000 customers from qualified, independent food retailers – specialty shops for fruits and vegetables and weekly markets – as well as bulk consumers and upscale gastronomy with fresh products from the region and from around the world. On a total area of 2.7 million m² they provide everything the consumer could want: Regional and international products, in every season, in sufficient quantities and in top quality. The handling volume amounts to approximately 7.8 million tonnes annually with a value of ca. 10.3 billion euros.

Through its members, GFI represents 95% of the wholesale markets as well as 80% of the weekly markets in Germany’s metropolitan regions. GFI regards itself as a partnership network and offers its members a broadly institutionalised knowledge transfer regarding central issues of commercial management, and, as a public platform, it provides a common stand at the Fruit Logistica. Domestic and international producers wishing to implement marketing measures in the qualified, independent retail food trade can rely on GFI as their central marketing partner.

The Berlin Wholesale Market is a founding member of GFI. The administrative office is located at the Berlin Wholesale Market, and the Market’s manager, Andreas Foidl, is a long-standing board member.

Furthermore, the Berlin Wholesale Market is a member of the World Union of Wholesale Markets. The WUWM was created as a non-profit organisation in 1955. As an international umbrella organisation with more than 200 members from forty countries, the WUWM unites the world’s leading freshness centres and also promotes best practice exchanges.
