Freshness Centre for Fruit & Vegetables

The Fruchthof – diversity from the world’s gardens

What variety... Stroll through the Fruchthof and you’ll feel like you are strolling through the gardens of the world. Here you see juicy Mediterranean apricots, there you see elegant asparagus from the nearby Beelitz region. Over there, vine tomatoes from the Netherlands and physalis from Africa are neatly arranged in their crates alongside Lollo Rosso & Co. from Italy and air-freighted mangos from Australia. Fresh pineapples, bananas and papayas have just arrived from South America. From the other side of the earth, Chinese lychees, pomegranates and dates from the Euphrates have been delivered. Two stands further down, the sweet fragrance of Greek mountain peaches rises into the customers’ noses.

Most of the 500 varieties of fruit and vegetables arrayed on the stands of the Fruchthof arrived fresh last night. The approximately 1,000 employees of the circa fifty wholesalers unloaded them from the trucks on forklifts, checked and weighed them, and the palettes and crates have been available for sale along the aisles since 2 am. Here you can find almost everything the world has to offer. In the winter months, imports dominate, whereas in summer increased quantities of fruits and salads from the region around Berlin and from the rest of Germany turn up on the loading ramps. Day after day, variety, freshness and quality are paramount.

The Fruchthof is open nearly round-the-clock, six days a week. The wholesalers offer comprehensive delivery services far into the region around Berlin and more than 200 largely roofed-over customer parking spaces – waiting for everyone who would like to stroll through the gardens of the world…
The wholesalers' comments
Since 1965, the Fruchthof has been located on the grounds of the Wholesale Market on Beusselstrasse, and our company has been there from the beginning. We are still convinced by this site. Located as it is in the heart of the capital, it provides ideal parameters for our customers and for our daily logistical challenges. Extensive renovation and modernisation in the fruit and vegetable hall as well as in the surrounding area have created optimal conditions for the storage and distribution of our sensitive products.

The Fruchthof in brief:

  • Total floor space 85,000 m²
  • Hall 30,000 m2, including 22,000 m² sales space
  • 50 wholesalers (1.000 employees)
  • More than 500 varities of fruits and vegetable (incl. seasonal products)
  • Handling volume: ca. 220,000 tonnes/year
  • 80 covered loading ramps
  • 120 electric forklifts
  • Central commercial refrigeration system
  • Completely modernised in 2007 (18 million Euro)
